History
In 1922, Alec Ruttger, second-generation owner, decided there was need for a larger dining room. At that time, there was only a small dining space, a part of the main house and porches. They set about building the present original section of the log dining hall. Peter Brand was hired to be in charge of construction. Many of the 54-foot poplar logs were cut and skidded from steep hills and hollows three miles north of the resort in the Placid Lake area known as the Devil's Washboard by early natives. Harvesting the timber by hand was dangerous and back-breaking work; those early pioneers recognized true quality and real beauty, and no amount of difficulty would keep them from their tasks. Later, in 1981, a new kitchen was built and the original kitchen was turned into the Colonial Dining Room (later renamed The Cabin Dining Room), and in 1987 the new log dining room was added.
